Even thought the original Call of Duty was released less than five years ago, the series has become one of the most profilic video game franchises currently on the market. In addition to Call of Duty one through four, we’ve also been graced with other titles in the franchise like Finest Hour and Big Red One. The latter was developed by Treyarch, Activision’s stalwart internal development house, who are also the people behind the latest installment of the franchise, Call of Duty: World at War.

While it sports the same engine as Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare – developed by CoD originator Infinity Ward – World at War takes the franchise back to where it started, World War II. But the twist here is the setting. The Pacific Theater of the war is the backdrop for World at War, but it’s not just a matter of replacing the bombed-out cities of Europe for the bombed out islands of the South Pacific. Trying to do the same type of gameplay just in a jungle setting sure didn’t work for Medal of Honor: Rising Sun, did it?

No, Treyarch realizes that that part of the war was fought very differently. Studio head Mark Lamia assures us, “it’s not just about locales.” The ground war in the Pacific was fought island by island against the deeply entrenched Imperial Japanese Army, who would fight down to the last man rather than surrender. The Allies had to fight bunker to bunker, relying on grenades and flamethrowers to clear out enemy machine gun nests and deeply dug tunnel systems. World at War intends to reflect the historical reality of those battles in its gameplay. The first live gameplay that Treyarch showed a group of journalists at their offices in Santa Monica, CA began with you, an American soldier, being held prisoner by a unit of Japanese soldiers. Before their captain can cut your head off like he just did one of your buddies, a squad of Americans bursts into the small village you’re being held in and liberates you. Well, you take a big part in your own liberation, fighting your way out of the hairy situation. One of the key elements of the game was on vivid display in this sequence. Fire is an integral part of the game, and like many other recent games (Far Cry 2 and Alone in the Dark come to mind immediately) it’s a living thing, propagating itself across different flammable surfaces and being affected by the wind’s vector. Again, this plays into the gameplay, considering how important the flamethrower was to the American troops in places like Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima. The Japanese were dug in, not just in bunkers, but tied to the tops of trees in hunting blinds or well camouflaged in the tall grass where they could snipe away at the oncoming American onslaught. When you’re fighting an invisible enemy like that, fire can be your best friend and your enemy’s worst nightmare.
